I have an honours degree in Geography, a postgraduate certification in eLearning and a Doctorate of Education – all from the University of Hull. My doctorate focused on academic libraries and how they are experienced by library users. I have a background in student engagement, student-centred research and volunteer development.

I find your blog really interesting. I’m thinking of doing the EdD at Hull in Sept. I just wondered if you could give some insight what to expect? I’m particularly interested in how you found the transition from geography to educational studies.

Hi Helen, thanks for your kind comment!
As education studies is interdisciplinary, I found a lot of overlap with human geography. Some areas of the literature were challenging at first as it was new to me, but other areas were much easier for the geographical background. A lot of the sociological, historical and even philosophical areas of the literature are easily relatable to everything I did in geography.
The EdD at Hull is a really good programme. There is a fantastic staff team and an incredible amount of experience. Our year group on the course have been a massive support and the programme and Hull is well structured to take advantage of that. We have a range of people from all kinds of backgrounds and I know they are keen on involving us with the new cohort. It’s been nice to learn in a non-intimidating environment and I think that is quite special for doctoral level.
